The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to withdraw the controversial tax reform bills sent to the National Assembly.
The NLC emphasized the need for wider consultations to ensure the bills reflect fairness and inclusivity for all regions.
In its New Year message titled “In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve,” NLC President Joe Ajaero stressed the importance of governance that prioritizes citizens’ welfare.
He highlighted the urgent need for improved policies that address the cost of living and ensure affordable access to food, healthcare, and housing.
“We call on the government at all levels to ensure that governance translates into real benefits for the people,” Ajaero stated.
He further continued his statement, “Policies must reflect transparency, honesty, and inclusivity, devoid of chicanery, nepotism, and strong-arm tactics.”
In addition, he emphasized the role of social dialogue in achieving sustainable reforms and national development for a more conducive and better working space.
The NLC also reaffirmed its commitment to pushing for a wage review to match current economic realities as the year unfolds.
Ajaero called for the full implementation of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act, stressing that decent wages are crucial to improving productivity to reduce poverty and also crime in society.
He added, “We shall engage the government for a wage review to safeguard workers’ welfare.”
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC criticized the increasing use of force against trade unions and workers, warning that it could lead to industrial unrest.
“The use of violence in engagements with workers and unions must cease,” the statement read.
The NLC remains firm in advocating for policies that promote social inclusion and economic progress, urging Nigerians to unite for a better and more prosperous 2025.
Therefore, with this strong determination and intentionality, many hope that the president addresses the issue by putting the citizens into consideration.
