The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully recovered $52.88 million in Galactica assets linked to former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, thanks to the collaboration with the United States.
This was announced by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, during a formal signing ceremony in Abuja on Friday, January 10.
Fagbemi disclosed that $50 million of the recovered funds will be allocated through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects, ensuring underserved communities gain access to reliable power.
The remaining $2.88 million will be directed to the International Institute of Justice, focusing on expanding Nigeria’s justice system and countering corruption.
“This asset return represents a significant milestone in the partnership between Nigeria and the United States to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law,” Fagbemi remarked.
The recovery reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring the proper use of public funds for growth of nation.
The initiative also reinforces Nigeria’s dedication to transparency and accountability in public service.
In addition to his remarks, Richard Mills, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, emphasized the importance of utilizing the funds effectively to benefit citizens, mostly the less privileged.
“The Ministry of Justice must ensure these funds are utilized effectively and transparently to improve the lives of Nigerians,” Mills stated.
This achievement marks another step in the fight against corruption and sets an example for public officials to prioritize integrity and accountability in governance.
As the funds are deployed, citizens hope for visible and tangible improvements in rural electrification and the justice system, showcasing the impact of international cooperation in addressing corruption-related challenges.
The recovery serves as a reminder of the importance of trustworthy governance and the need for continued efforts to ensure public resources are managed responsibly for the betterment of all Nigerians.
