Lionel Messi played what could be his final competitive game in Argentina last night, leaving fans in tears at the Estadio Mas Monumental.
The 38-year-old superstar delivered a brace in a 3-0 victory against Venezuela, marking a fairytale farewell in front of his home supporters.
The match was highly emotional as Messi, who had earlier described it as “very, very special,” soaked in the chants from thousands of fans.
His wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and their children watched proudly from the stands.
Meanwhile, supporters waved flags and banners, celebrating a career that has defined modern football.
Speaking after the match, Messi admitted he was uncertain about his future in the game.
“Same as I said before about the World Cup, that I don’t think I’ll play another,” he told reporters.

“Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. But well, we’re almost there, so I’m excited and motivated to play it.”
Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, said he would decide after his current season and preseason in 2026.
“Like I always say, I go day by day, going by how I feel,” he explained. “When I feel good, I enjoy it, but when I don’t, honestly, I don’t have a good time, so I prefer not to be there if I don’t feel good. So we’ll see.”
He added that closing his competitive career at home was a dream fulfilled:
“Being able to finish this way here was what I always dreamed of. Being able to celebrate with my people… for many years I received a lot of affection at Barcelona, and my dream was to also have it here, in my country, with my people.”
Messi’s wife Antonela posted a heartfelt message on Instagram: “Proud of you, every step you take and everything you built with love and effort. How lucky are we to be with you on this path!!! We love you.”
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni also grew emotional while reflecting on the night.
“Having been able to coach him has honestly been a pleasure,” he said. “He earned the right to decide when to stop. He will always have support.”
Although Messi will skip Argentina’s next match against Ecuador, speculation continues about whether he will appear at the 2026 World Cup.
