In a strategic move to ensure the safety of lives and property, operatives of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Epe Command, have arrested a man who had been disguising as mentally unstable.
The suspect, identified as Mr. Godwin from Ughelli Local Government Area of Delta State, was arrested after weeks of silent monitoring by security agents and rising suspicion from local residents.
Godwin had allegedly been pretending to be mentally unstable while concealing his involvement in criminal activity, sparking fears of a possible kidnapping ring in the area.
He was often seen loitering around an abandoned security post near the T-junction along Lagos Road in Epe.
His odd behaviour and inconsistent appearance drew attention from members of the community.
In addition, residents noticed he frequently changed clothes early in the morning and held late-night phone calls.
This led to an intelligence report being sent to the LNSC.
On May 5, during a routine patrol, the LNSC officers were informed that the suspect was temporarily away from the area.
“On May 5, during a routine patrol, officers were informed by residents that the suspect was temporarily absent from the area,” LNSC said in a statement.
Acting on the tip-off, officers moved swiftly to search the area where he often stayed. During the operation, 27 registered SIM cards were found hidden inside a section of a block wall at the abandoned structure.
“Officers were immediately dispatched, and Mr. Godwin was arrested shortly after his return to the location,” the statement continued.
Moreover, the suspect reportedly confirmed his name and origin during the preliminary questioning.
However, he refused to say where the phones linked to the SIM cards were kept.
Meanwhile, a local food vendor who had occasional interactions with him raised more concerns.
According to her, the suspect’s behavior did not match that of a truly mentally ill person.
“A local food vendor corroborated reports of his strange behavior, noting that he often appeared mentally sound despite his erratic lifestyle,” the LNSC added.
The disguised kidnapper in Lagos is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Authorities believe he may be linked to a wider network of criminal activities, possibly involving kidnapping or fraud.
It also shows that no suspicious activity is too small to report, as community efforts contributed to the arrest.
As security officers continue their investigation, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior immediately.
