The Lagos State Government has announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion for the 10th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2025.

The marathon, which promotes fitness and talent development, will take place between 5:00 am and 1:00 pm, with several major roads affected.

The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who assured residents that adequate traffic management measures would be implemented to minimize disruptions.

To ensure the safety of runners and the smooth execution of the marathon, various roadblocks will be set up along the designated routes.

The race will begin at the National Stadium in Surulere and proceed through Ikorodu Road, Third Mainland Bridge, Dolphin Road, Alfred Rewane Road, Falomo Roundabout, Bourdillon Road, and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, before concluding at Eko Atlantic.

Osiyemi emphasized that adjoining roads, junctions, and intersections along this route would be temporarily blocked with concrete barriers to prevent unauthorized access.

Meanwhile, alternative routes have been provided to ensure a seamless flow of traffic.

Commuters from Ikeja, Badagry, Surulere, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Okota, Sango-Otta, and Epe-Lekki Expressway have been advised to take designated routes leading to Eko Bridge and Outer Marina.

Furthermore, Osiyemi assured the public that LASTMA, NPF, FRSC, LSNC, and LAWMA officials would be stationed at strategic points to manage traffic and assist motorists.

“To ensure safety and prevent unauthorized access to the race corridor, adjoining roads, junctions, and intersections will be blocked with concrete barriers,” he stated.

Notably, the Third Mainland Bridge will be closed to vehicles heading towards Lagos Island but will remain accessible to those traveling to the mainland.

In addition, Victoria Island motorists have been advised to use Independence Bridge, Apongbon, Ijora-Olopa, and Herbert Macaulay Road for easier navigation.

The Lagos City Marathon has been recognized for its role in encouraging healthy living, talent discovery, and international sports recognition.

The government, therefore, urges residents to embrace the event while planning their trips accordingly.

Osiyemi emphasized the importance of patience, stating that the closures are part of the broader traffic management strategy.

“The partial and total road closures are part of traffic management plans for the 10th Edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon,” he reiterated.

Lagosians have been encouraged to support the initiative, as such events not only promote fitness but also boost tourism and the economy.
