In a firm denial on Thursday, Lagos State Government dismissed claims by former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi that it orchestrated the demolition of a property believed to belong to his brother.
The statement was issued by Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso, who clarified that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other state authority had no part in the action.
Omotoso stressed, “The Lagos State Government is compelled to address the recent allegations made by Mr. Peter Obi regarding the demolition of a property belonging to his brother.

We wish to categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other arm of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition.”
Moreover, he highlighted that even the supervising authority, Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser on eGIS & Urban Development overseeing LASBCA, confirmed the agency’s non-involvement.
Peter Obi’s camp alleged that the property was unlawfully demolished by state forces.
However, Lagos has launched its own inquiry and insisted that no one associated with the government acted out of line.
Omotoso added, “We urge the public to disregard Mr. Peter Obi’s claims and rest assured that the Lagos State Government will continue to work tirelessly to maintain law and order in our great state.”
The government emphasised its dedication to legality and accountability, warning that it “will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or violations of extant laws.”
An official investigation has commenced, led by LASBCA under the directive of the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, FNIA.

Omotoso explained that this probe will “help clarify the circumstances surrounding the demolition and ensure that any necessary actions are taken.”
The administration reiterated that it upholds residents’ rights and remains committed to public safety.
The phrasing in Omotoso’s remarks “We will not be swayed by baseless allegations or attempts to discredit our efforts” signals the government’s resolve to uphold its image and reassure citizens.
However, Citizens have been encouraged to await the findings of the LASBCA-led probe before drawing conclusions.
Meanwhile, Governor Peter Obi and his supporters may decide next steps depending on what the investigation reveals.
