Lagos State Assembly Impeaches Speaker Obasa Amid Allegations of Fraud

The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa during a plenary session on Monday, following allegations of fraud.

The decision, confirmed by multiple sources, also saw the indefinite suspension of the Assembly’s Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko.

In unanimous resolution, lawmakers elected Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker, while Mojeed Fatai was appointed Deputy Speaker.

The precise reasons for Obasa’s impeachment remain unclear.

However, speaking on the development, Abiodun Tobun, a lawmaker representing Epe Constituency 1, emphasized the need for change, stating,

“The members of the House felt we had had enough of the leadership of Mudashiru Obasa. We unanimously agreed that Hon. Mojisola Meranda would become the new Speaker and Hon. Fatai Adebola the Deputy Speaker.”

He added that all principal positions and standing committees in the Assembly had been dissolved.

Obasa’s impeachment follows growing controversy surrounding allegations of financial misconduct.

Recently, the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition accused the Assembly of spending ₦17 billion on constructing a gate.

The former Speaker dismissed the claims as baseless, stating,“How much is the allocation of the Assembly in a whole year for anyone to claim we spent ₦17 billion on a gate?”

He also denied allegations of spending ₦200 million on a Thanksgiving service, attributing such reports to political motivations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obasa, a sixth-term lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I under the All Progressives Congress, had served as Speaker for years but faced repeated allegations of financial mismanagement.

Tobun highlighted that the Assembly’s decision to impeach Obasa was aimed at restoring integrity to the House, saying,

“We owe our constituencies and Lagos State the duty of restoring the sanity and integrity of this House. That is why we have taken this action—to save our image and our state.”

As the Assembly undergoes leadership changes, lawmakers are urging a renewed focus on accountability and transparency to regain public trust.
