Jay-Z has made significant progress in his legal battle as a federal judge granted his request to file a motion to dismiss a lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault more than 24 years ago.
The decision, issued by Judge Analisa Torres on Thursday, January 2, marks a major step forward for the 55-year-old rapper, whose legal team continues to push back against the allegations. 
According to court documents, Torres approved the motion, stating,“Carter’s request to file a motion to dismiss Plaintiff’s amended complaint is GRANTED.”
The ruling follows efforts by Jay-Z’s legal team, led by Alex Spiro, to highlight legal discrepancies in the case, including expired deadlines and jurisdictional concerns.
The court outlined timelines for the accuser, referred to as Jane Doe, to file her opposition papers by February 28, with Jay-Z’s legal team having until March 14 to respond if needed.
Jay-Z’s attorneys argued that the allegations fall outside the timeline permitted by law, emphasizing that the Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act did not take effect until December 2000—three months after the alleged incident.
“The GMV Law was not enacted until December 19, 2000,” Spiro explained, further stating, “It cannot apply retroactively to create a cause of action unavailable to Plaintiff at the time in question.”
The case, involving accusations against both Jay-Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, has sparked widespread attention.
However, Jay-Z’s legal team maintains confidence that the motion to dismiss will succeed, providing relief for the rapper and protecting his longstanding reputation.
The rapper’s legal counsel also noted that the lawsuit lacked substantial evidence and relied heavily on claims that could not be corroborated by records or witnesses.
Furthermore, Jay-Z’s lawyers emphasized that allowing the case to proceed would set a precedent of legal actions being filed well beyond the statutory limits.
