INEC Holds FCT Area Council Elections Under New Electoral Act 2026

All eyes are on Abuja this weekend as the Independent National Electoral Commission prepares for its first major test under the newly signed Electoral Act 2026.

The Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, alongside key bye-elections in Rivers and Kano states, will serve as a real-time trial for the updated legal framework.

Moreover, the polls are widely seen as a preview of what Nigerians may expect in the 2027 general elections.

The INEC FCT Area Council elections 2026 mark a critical moment for Nigeria’s democratic process. Therefore, the conduct and outcome of these polls could shape public trust in the new law.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, disclosed that 1,680,315 registered voters are expected to participate across 2,822 polling units in the six Area Councils.

Meanwhile, bye-elections will also be held in Rivers State for Ahoada East II and Khana II constituencies, and in Kano State for Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies.

The 2026 Electoral Act has introduced major changes. Key among them is the statutory backing of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, and the Election Results Viewing Portal, IReV.

In preparation, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike declared a work-free day to enable residents travel and vote. The directive, approved by President Bola Tinubu, was announced in a special broadcast.

To enhance security, a restriction of movement has also been ordered. “Similarly, the President has approved the restriction of movement within the FCT from 8p.m., of February 20 to 6p.m., of February 21, 2026.

Consequently, all security agencies are directed to ensure strict compliance with this directive,” Wike said.

He urged residents to show maturity during the polls. “We must show the world that we are a mature and responsible electorate, capable of conducting ourselves with dignity and decorum.”

Furthermore, Wike praised the president’s assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026. “Democracy has always been a work-in-progress due to the evolving democratic process.

However, we will keep getting better by always looking into the Electoral Act with a view to strengthening our democratic process,” he added.

Encouraging turnout, he said, “My dear residents, I urge you to make your voice heard. Come out on Saturday, and vote for the candidates of your choice. Our prayer, as an administration, is that the elections will facilitate the emergence of such quality leaders that will contribute meaningfully to development, peace and prosperity in the FCT.”

The INEC FCT Area Council elections 2026 are therefore more than routine local polls. They represent a strategic rehearsal for broader national contests. However, their success will depend on peaceful participation and strict adherence to the new rules.
