FG Sets 60-Day Closure for Marine Bridge Over Structural Repairs

In a major traffic advisory, the Federal Ministry of Works has announced the closure of Marine Bridge in Lagos for a 60-day repair project.

The repair work is expected to begin on Sunday, April 27, and will be executed in three phases to ensure structural safety.

This development was confirmed by Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos State, during a live interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday.

She stated that the first phase of the project would involve a complete closure of the bridge’s entrance for 20 days.

According to Kesha, the bridge, often mistaken for the Ijora Bridge by commuters, will be lifted in key sections to replace its outdated bearings.

“This phase of the repair involves replacing about 50 bearings. To do that, we need to lift the bridge at specific points,” she explained.

The initial closure is expected to result in heavy traffic around Apapa, Ijora, and Iganmu, as vehicles will be redirected away from the blocked entry point.

Therefore, road users are urged to plan ahead and explore alternative routes.

“The first section at the beginning of the bridge will require a full closure for 20 days,” Kesha added.

This particular phase is anticipated to have the most impact on traffic flow, making early awareness crucial for daily commuters and truck drivers.

Meanwhile, the second and third phases will take place without full closures.

Kesha said, “The second section is around the middle of the bridge, and we plan to divert traffic there. The two lanes from Iganmu will be merged.”

Furthermore, she explained that the final stage of repairs would occur near the Area B Police Command, where the bridge descends into Apapa.

This last stretch will also last 20 days, with traffic diverted once again.

To reduce gridlock, Kesha offered advice specifically to articulated truck drivers and smaller vehicle owners.

“If you’re an articulated truck (driver), don’t come through Ijora. From Costain, link Iganmu and head straight to Apapa,” she advised.

“Smaller vehicles or trucks with business around Ijora 7up can turn left at the roundabout and use the access route up to the bridge,” she added.

Moreover, Kesha noted that a previous unplanned closure had caused serious traffic delays in Lagos.

She assured that this time, residents have been given advance notice and proper traffic management plans have been put in place.

Kesha emphasized the importance of obeying road signs and staying informed throughout the duration of the repair.

“Follow road signs, pay attention to diversion markings, and check traffic updates,” she advised.

This closure, although disruptive, is aimed at enhancing public safety and preserving the structure of one of Lagos’ most important bridges.

Therefore, Lagos residents and especially those commuting through Apapa, Iganmu, and Ijora are encouraged to seek alternative routes.
