The Federal Government has donated N30 million to the family of the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of Nigeria’s national flag, as a mark of appreciation for his contributions to the country.
The donation was officially presented on Thursday at Akinkunmi’s residence in Elebu, Ibadan, by the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, alongside the Oyo State Director of NOA, Olukemi Afolayan.
Akinkunmi, who designed the national flag in 1959, passed away on August 30, 2023, at the age of 87 after a brief illness.
He was laid to rest on September 6, 2024, a year after his passing, as his family had awaited a promised state burial.
However, the donation is seen as a recognition of his legacy and a step towards ensuring that his contributions remain valued.
Speaking during the cheque presentation, Issa-Onilu emphasized that the N30 millionwas not a payment for Akinkunmi’s service but rather support for his family.
“The donation of N30 million to the family of the renowned national flag designer was not to pay for the services of the late legend but to support his family in appreciation of his contributions to the country,” he stated.
His remarks highlighted the government’s effort to honor Akinkunmi’s memory and provide assistance to his loved ones.
Meanwhile, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, one of the deceased’s sons, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for the financial support.
The gesture, he noted, serves as a reminder that his father’s work continues to be recognized and respected.
Many Nigerians have also called for continued efforts to preserve Akinkunmi’s legacy and ensure that his contributions to national identity remain celebrated for generations.
