The Nigerian government has called for a full autopsy and a transparent investigation into the sudden death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda.
The tragic incident has raised concerns, with authorities and football enthusiasts seeking clarity on the circumstances leading to his passing.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described Lawal’s death as “pathetic and suspicious.”
She emphasized the need for a thorough probe to uncover the truth behind the incident.

“This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover-up at all. This is so sad!” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
“The Nigerian government will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation. May his soul rest in peace and God give the family the fortitude to bear this loss.”
Lawal, a professional footballer for Vipers Sports Club in Uganda and a final-year student at Cavendish University, reportedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade on the morning of February 24, 2025.
The Kajjansi Police Division in Uganda confirmed an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Preliminary findings indicate that Lawal had driven to the shopping mall in a vehicle with registration number UBQ 695G to visit his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national residing in room 416.
According to Naima, Lawal was preparing tea when she left for a game center within the mall.
Shortly after, at approximately 8:00 a.m., he allegedly fell from the balcony.
He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
However, concerns have been raised over the nature of the incident, prompting demands for a more in-depth investigation.

Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and interrogating key witnesses to establish what led to Lawal’s death.
Meanwhile, many Nigerians have expressed shock and grief over the tragic loss, with calls for justice growing louder.
The Nigerian government’s insistence on a transparent probe highlights the severity of the case.
Many believe that a thorough investigation will not only provide closure to Lawal’s grieving family but also prevent similar incidents in the future.
