Notable Nigerian activist, Just Adetoun, has expressed serious concern over the rising cost of food items across markets, stating that the situation is fast becoming unbearable, especially for the average Nigerian.
In a viral video shared on her social media, Adetoun spoke emotionally about her recent experience at Mile 12 market where she discovered that a bag of tatashe now costs N55,000, while a bag of pepper goes for N47,000.
“It is not funny anymore. There is fire on the mountain,” she cried out, adding that she initially believed the prices were inflated because of the recent Muslim festival.
According to her, she visited the market several times during the festive period to confirm for herself.
However, she noted that things have worsened even after the celebration.
“There is fire on our mountain,” she emphasized again.
In addition, Adetoun criticized the attitude of those urging her to remain silent, especially those defending the government due to personal or family ties.
She asked, “If minimum wage is N70,000 for a family of four, and they use N55,000 to buy tatashe, what is left?”
Her statement highlighted how the increasing food prices are leaving little or nothing for basic needs in many households.
Adetoun did not hold back as she called out the President and key government officials.
“President Tinubu! Minister of Agriculture! Minister of Welfare! Politicians!” she shouted.
She noted that some people assume she’s immune to the crisis.
“As if they are bringing tatashe for me from Bourdillon,” she added sarcastically.
Furthermore, she stressed the health risks associated with the current situation.
“Go to the hospital and see treatments for poor nutrition, malnutrition… all of this is related to food,” she warned.
She added that an average Nigerian child cannot afford food worth even N1,000 daily.
Meanwhile, the activist shared that people have been urging her to stop speaking out.
“And somebody will be calling me on the phone and saying Adetoun don’t talk! As if I am not affected,” she said.
Her passionate outcry has drawn wide attention, especially as inflation and food insecurity continue to threaten millions of Nigerians.
This latest appeal adds to growing calls for urgent action from the government to stabilize food prices and protect vulnerable citizens.
