Chelsea Close In on Liam Rosenior as New Head Coach

Chelsea appears poised for another change in the dugout, with English coach Liam Rosenior emerging as the leading candidate to become the club’s next head coach.

This is coming just days after Enzo Maresca’s exit from Stamford Bridge on January 1.

According to developments around the club, the outgoing Strasbourg manager is expected to meet Chelsea’s sporting leadership team today.

The talks are aimed at finalising his appointment as Maresca’s replacement. However, while discussions continue, no official confirmation has yet been made.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg are already preparing for life after Rosenior.

The French side, also owned by BlueCo, have reportedly begun the search for a replacement.

Former Wolves manager Gary O’Neill is understood to be among three candidates under consideration.

This development further signals how advanced the talks with Chelsea may be.

In the short term, Chelsea have been steady despite the uncertainty.

The team was temporarily placed under the guidance of Under-21 head coach Calum McFarlane.

He took charge for the difficult trip to the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea earned a creditable 1-1 draw against Manchester City, thanks to a late equaliser from Enzo Fernandez.

Speaking after the match, McFarlane explained the situation clearly. “When I originally took over I was told I would take the Man City game, and there’s a chance the new manager might be in on Monday, that’s what I was told originally,” he said.

He added, “It’s Sunday now, we’ve been solely focused on the game. For all I know, the new manager will be in shortly and I will lead the team until he’s in.”

Rosenior’s potential arrival has therefore raised eyebrows across the football world. However, his coaching journey suggests careful planning rather than haste.

After a 16-year playing career with clubs including Bristol City, Fulham, Reading, Hull City and Brighton, he retired in 2018. Moreover, his transition into management has been steady and respected.

He almost guided Hull City into the Championship play-offs in 2024.

Furthermore, he later took charge at Strasbourg, where he delivered a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 last season.

That achievement was widely praised, especially given the competitive nature of the league.

Therefore, Chelsea’s interest may reflect a long-term vision rather than a short-term gamble.

In addition, Rosenior’s familiarity with BlueCo’s structure could ease the transition. However, expectations at Stamford Bridge remain intense.
