The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following allegations of his marriage to Ms. Dora Chichah in the United States.
The suspension, announced in a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” on January 16, 2025, was signed by the Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, and the Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo.
The Diocese stated that Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into the marriage on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA.
A widely circulated video of the wedding prompted the church to act swiftly.
“By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension in accordance with the provisions of Canon 1394 S1, and I, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, Bishop of Warri, do hereby officially decree that he is suspended from the exercise of sacred ministry,” the statement declared.
The Diocese revealed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had submitted a formal request on November 30, 2024, seeking release from his priestly obligations.
However, the process was not completed before his marriage, as the diocese had requested supporting documents to begin the release procedure.
The statement added, “As such, he is prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity.
All canonical implications associated with this suspension take immediate effect (cf. Can. 1333).”
The diocese emphasized that Fr. Oghenerukevwe retains the right to petition for a revocation or amendment of the decree but must show a willingness to reconcile.
It also called on him to reflect on his decision and seek guidance.
“May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation,” the statement concluded.
This incident has sparked reactions within the Catholic community, highlighting the importance of adhering to the sacred vows of Holy Orders.
Many see this as a cautionary tale for clergy members to uphold their commitments while maintaining transparency in their dealings with church authorities.
