The All Progressives Congress (APC) has finally spoken on the prolonged political crisis rocking Rivers State, revealing that discreet negotiations are already underway to calm tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
The disclosure came late Thursday, January 29, during a live appearance on TVC News’ Beyond the Headlines, where APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, confirmed that behind-the-scenes efforts are being used to stabilise the state.
Basiru said the silence of the APC leadership should not be mistaken for inaction. According to him, critical political discussions are often carried out quietly rather than through public statements.
He explained that while the public remains focused on court battles and political exchanges, important reconciliation efforts are unfolding away from the spotlight.
Responding to concerns over Governor Fubara’s political future amid impeachment threats, Basiru said meaningful engagement rarely happens on television or social media. He described politicians as “nocturnal animals,” suggesting that real negotiations often take place quietly at night.
Moreover, Basiru assured that the APC’s goal is not to produce winners or losers in the Rivers crisis. Instead, the party is seeking a peaceful resolution where there would be “no victor and no vanquished.”

He stressed that stability in Rivers State remains a priority, especially given its political and economic importance to the federal government. Meanwhile, he confirmed that Wike, despite being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, is deeply involved in ongoing discussions.
Basiru acknowledged Wike as a major political stakeholder and a strong supporter of President Bola Tinubu. He noted that Rivers State plays a key role in advancing the President’s agenda, making Wike’s cooperation essential.
Furthermore, Basiru revealed that earlier tensions between the APC leadership and Wike have eased significantly. He said the party has moved past previous public disagreements and is now focused on broader political objectives.
In addition, he hinted that the unfolding talks are also linked to long-term strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, unity and stability across states remain crucial for future success.
Although details of the negotiations remain undisclosed, Basiru maintained that steady progress is being made. Therefore, he urged residents of Rivers State to remain calm and hopeful.
