Alaafin of Oyo Breaks Silence on Viral Video with Ooni of Ife

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has addressed the viral video that stirred online reactions following his appearance at a public event in Ibadan.

The video showed the monarch seated as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, exchanged greetings with other traditional rulers.

The footage, which was captured at an event hosted by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, quickly spread across social media platforms.

Users criticized the Alaafin’s body language, claiming that remaining seated while the Ooni moved around to greet other kings was inappropriate.

However, Oba Owoade has responded, describing the uproar as unnecessary and misleading.

Through a statement issued by his Personal Assistant, Kolade Oladele, the monarch accused bloggers and online critics of twisting the incident for attention.

“It has come to our attention that certain bloggers and online commentators are generating needless controversies surrounding the interaction between our revered monarchs in Yorubaland,” the statement began.

The Alaafin clarified that the incident had been taken out of context and should not be used to fuel division among Yoruba kings.

He emphasized that such debates only divert attention from the real issues facing the Yoruba people. “This latest instalment in a series of manufactured debates is an unhelpful exercise that distracts and detracts from the truly important issues,” the statement continued.

Furthermore, he highlighted the challenges facing Yoruba land, including insecurity, unemployment, and economic struggles. “At a time when our people face profound socio-economic and security challenges, it is incumbent on all of us… to rise above pettiness and prioritise the work of uplifting our communities,” he added.

The Alaafin reaffirmed his respect for the Ooni of Ife and other Yoruba monarchs.

He explained that royal leadership should serve as a source of unity, not competition. “The Alaafin holds the Ooni of Ife and all custodians of Yoruba heritage in high regard,” the palace stated.

Moreover, Oba Owoade called on the public not to be swayed by performative gestures captured online.

“He will not be drawn into performative gestures or public spectacles that reduce the gravitas of Yoruba monarchy to fodder for digital sensationalism.”

He stressed the need for collaboration among traditional leaders, especially in times like this when the region needs development and peace.

“Our forebears understood the weight of royal responsibility… His Imperial Majesty embraces this legacy with humility and honour.”

“We call on the public to reject attempts to sow seeds of discord… and join us in reimagining a Yorubaland where our traditions serve as catalysts for progress.”
