A Kenyan presidential candidate has issued a bold message to Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote over his refinery business.
Patrick Osoi claimed he would establish a refinery in Kenya if elected president.
He also suggested that Dangote might have little reason to continue operating in Nigeria.
During a campaign speech, Osoi addressed the billionaire directly. He urged Dangote not to rush his refinery plans, saying his own administration would change Kenya’s energy industry.
“I want to tell Dangote, please don’t hurry up to start the refinery because by next year February, the time I’m sworn in as the president of this country, you’ll be back in Nigeria.”
Osoi also claimed that Kenya already had refinery capacity capable of meeting the country’s needs.
He argued that local business owners could take on the task.
“We have refinery which can do that job. We also have business people in this country who can do that job,” he stated.
The candidate said his political movement would focus on supporting Kenyan businesses.
He also stressed the importance of developing local industries rather than relying on outside investors.
“That is what we stand for and this is the home of our movement,” he added.
They also raise questions about Kenya’s plans for local energy production and its approach to foreign investment.
However, Osoi’s statements reflect his campaign claims and ambitions.
His election victory, proposed refinery plans and ability to deliver on them remain uncertain.
