African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has outlined plans he says would reshape Nigeria if elected president. Speaking at the ADC headquarters in Abuja, Atiku addressed Nigerians during the country’s 66th Independence anniversary.
He focused on elections, the economy, security and the cost of basic goods. Atiku promised to strengthen the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission. He also pledged to publish results from every polling unit promptly.
According to him, anyone involved in vote buying or result manipulation would face prosecution. He urged Nigerians to protect their votes and reject intimidation during the 2027 election.
“The coming election offers us a peaceful way to choose our course. This country is yours,” he said.
The ADC candidate also called on voters to study candidates and demand clear plans. He said campaign promises should include measurable steps that voters can track. On the economy, Atiku promised to reduce the cost of food, petrol, and electricity. He also listed healthcare, education and transport among areas he said would receive attention.
Atiku further promised measures to create jobs and improve security across the country. His economic plan includes a capped subsidy for petrol produced by local refineries. He said imported petrol would not qualify under the proposed arrangement. Atiku argued that the plan could help lower petrol prices for consumers.
He also promised greater openness around government spending.
“We will publish the costs, independently audit the payments and cut government waste to help fund the programme,” he stated.
The proposal has previously drawn questions from the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
The council has asked Atiku to explain the legal and financial basis of the proposed petrol subsidy.

Atiku also spoke about the rule of law and the treatment of people facing detention. He cited the cases of Sheikh Sani Khalifa Zaria and Nasir El-Rufai. He further said Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should have his right to appeal respected.
The Atiku 2027 election plans also include greater public accountability. He urged citizens to demand transparency in budgets, projects, and government spending. Atiku said his proposed administration would focus on economic relief, security and jobs.
He also placed democratic institutions and electoral reforms among his stated priorities.
