Long before he became Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu faced a major security test as Rivers State Commissioner of Police.
He arrived as Commissioner of Police when anger remained high over the killing of SP Bako Angbashim.
Angbashim was killed in September 2023 while serving as DPO of Ahoada Police Division.
The incident deepened security fears across the area.
Disu assumed office on November 15, 2023, and quickly visited Ahoada East. His focus was finding those linked to the attack.
One name stood out during the manhunt: David Gift Okpara, popularly known as 2Baba.
During his assignment, Disu gave officers a clear message:
“Nobody kills a police officer and goes scot-free.”
The statement captured the urgency surrounding the operation against the gang.
The Rivers Police Command later worked with other security agencies to track the wanted gang leader.
Police said the operation involved intelligence gathering and joint efforts across the affected communities.
More than 70 suspects connected to Angbashim’s murder were arrested and prosecuted, according to the police.
The manhunt eventually led security teams to 2Baba’s hideout.
Police confirmed his death after a joint operation in February 2024. His remains were later recovered from a forest area in Ahoada West.
The operation also brought attention to the ₦100 million bounty announced after Angbashim’s death.
The Rivers State Government later redeemed the pledge for information that helped locate 2Baba.
The fight against criminal groups did not end with the 2Baba operation.
Under Disu, the Rivers Command continued operations against cult groups and other criminal networks across the state.
The command also worked with communities and other security agencies to improve intelligence sharing.
For supporters of his Rivers record, the period showed a strong focus on joint operations and tracking suspected criminal leaders.
His Rivers assignment remains closely linked with the police response to Angbashim’s killing and the search for 2Baba.
