Music legend Lionel Richie has undergone a heart procedure after a series of health scares disrupted his tour. The 77-year-old singer was treated for atrial fibrillation, commonly known as AFib, according to his representative.
His representative, Jeff Raymond, said the procedure went “perfectly” and Richie is “doing great.”
The latest update gives fans more details about the health problems that forced Richie to seek medical care twice. Richie was performing with Earth, Wind & Fire on his “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour.
However, health concerns began affecting his performances several months ago. In June, Richie became dizzy during the opening concert in St. Paul. He was unable to complete the show and left the stage earlier than planned.
The singer later returned to performing before another health scare occurred in August. After his August 29 concert in St. Louis, Richie checked himself into a hospital.
He then underwent cardiac tests after experiencing health concerns. During the St. Louis performance, Richie reportedly needed a chair to complete “All Night Long.”
Doctors initially looked at dehydration as a possible reason for his condition.
Further medical checks later revealed the heart issue that required treatment. Richie has now undergone a minimally invasive ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation. The treatment is expected to give him time to recover before returning to the stage.
His remaining concerts with Earth, Wind & Fire have also been canceled. The affected shows were scheduled for San Francisco, Chicago and Columbus. Richie’s representative said the singer plans to return to performing soon.
However, no specific date has been announced for his comeback.
