The Nigeria Police Force is seeking stronger communication strategies as it works to improve public confidence in policing.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, met with NIPR leaders to discuss how communication can build trust.
The meeting also focused on better police communication ahead of Nigeria’s hosting of a major global public relations forum.
Disu received a delegation from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation was led by NIPR President and Chairman of Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku.
The IGP Disu NIPR meeting took place on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Neliaku briefed the police chief on the 2026 World Public Relations Forum and Africa Charter Forum.
The events will hold at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
The World Public Relations Forum is expected to draw more than 3,000 delegates from 126 countries.
The NIPR team requested police support for security planning and coverage during the international event.
The delegation also invited Disu to deliver a keynote address at the forum.
Police officers were also encouraged to register and take part in the programme.
Disu said both organisations have an important role in improving public confidence. He stressed that police officers influence how citizens view the Force through their daily actions.
The IGP said professionalism, fairness, transparency and clear communication remain important to public trust.
He also reaffirmed the police commitment to policing by consent and service-focused policing.
According to him, officers should show professionalism, empathy, accountability and respect for human rights.
The police chief further requested NIPR support in training officers on specialised communication skills.
He also called for a clear communication framework to better explain the work of police officers.
The framework would help highlight their efforts and sacrifices toward public safety and national security.
The IGP Disu NIPR meeting therefore placed communication at the centre of efforts to strengthen public trust.
Nigeria is scheduled to host the 2026 World Public Relations Forum from November 15 to 21 in Abuja.
The event is being hosted by NIPR under the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management.
The meeting also brings attention to the wider role of public relations in building trust between institutions and citizens.
