President Bola Tinubu has approved an EFCC-recovered property as the new headquarters of Nigeria’s data protection agency.
The facility was commissioned in Abuja on Monday by Communications Minister Bosun Tijani.
The move marks a major change for the Nigeria Data Protection Commission as its duties continue to expand.
Tijani said the commission had requested a better permanent office to match its growing role.
“The President directed that a property of this size that was recovered from the work of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission be allocated to NDPC,” the minister said.
He described the decision as an example of putting recovered government assets back to public use.
“An asset that is recovered on behalf of the Nigerian people has been returned to productive use for the protection of Nigerian people. A property once associated with the consequence of corruption is today becoming the headquarters of an institution dedicated to protecting Nigerians and strengthening trust in our digital economy”, Tijani said.
The minister also recalled the commission’s early funding challenges before Tinubu provided financial support.
He noted that Tinubu signed the Nigeria Data Protection Act after taking office in 2023.
The law gave the commission stronger powers to protect Nigerians’ privacy and personal information.
NDPC chief Vincent Olatunji said the agency received approval for the property from EFCC in July 2025.
Renovation work began in March 2026, transforming the facility into the commission’s new headquarters.
Olatunji said the commission has since licensed 356 Data Protection Compliance Organisations.
He added that the sector has helped create more than 27,000 jobs within three years.
The agency has also generated over N12 billion in revenue during the same period.
The NDPC headquarters is expected to strengthen the agency’s ability to protect data rights.
