Republicans have opened their first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, with Donald Trump taking center stage.
The president has thrown his weight behind the party’s effort to keep control of Congress.
Trump also made a major promise that could grab voters’ attention ahead of the November midterm elections.
He said every adult U.S. citizen could receive $5,000 if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress.
“If the Republicans win the Senate and House, because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said.
Trump did not provide details on how the payments would be funded or delivered.
The Associated Press estimates that such a plan could cost at least $1 trillion.
The Republican midterm convention comes as the party fights to protect slim majorities in the House and Senate.
Trump told supporters he intends to campaign for Republican candidates across the country before voting begins.
“I’m going to go to every one of those states for congressmen and for senators. I’m going to do that. And we’re going to have rallies,” Trump said.
He also urged voters to treat the election as though his own name would appear on the ballot.
“So I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot. I’m on the ballot. Just one more time,” Trump told the crowd.
The Republican midterm convention continues Thursday, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance scheduled to address supporters.
Democrats have also stepped up their criticism of Trump’s economic record and other policies.
