Residents across several parts of Akure have raised fresh concerns after a strange smell spread through the state capital.
Residents say the smell is strongest in the evening and early morning, making daily activities uncomfortable.
Areas reportedly affected include Oba-Ile, Shagari, Onigari, Ijoka, Alagbaka and Oda Road. Many residents described the smell as chemical-like and said it has become a regular occurrence.
One resident, Mrs Iyabo Adebisi, said, “The smell has become disturbing. Sometimes, you cannot stay outside comfortably because of the intensity of the odour. We are worried about what we may be inhaling.”
Another resident, Abiodun Adedotun, urged the government to act quickly.
He said, “We need urgent government attention in identifying the source of this smell and ensuring it is stopped because little children and the elderly are inhaling this odour.”
Health experts also called for urgent air quality checks. They warned that long exposure to polluted air could affect the respiratory and heart systems.
The Ondo State Government confirmed the development and said investigations are already underway. Commissioner for Environment, Tob Loko, said early findings linked the problem to the illegal discharge of untreated waste into a stream flowing through parts of Akure.
Loko explained that the pollution threatens public health and violates environmental laws. He added, “Residents are also encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activities, illegal waste disposal, or environmental violations to the Ondo State Ministry of Environment for immediate investigation and necessary action.”
The offensive odour investigation continues as officials work to identify those responsible and restore a safe environment for residents.
