A fresh twist has emerged in the killing of an Anambra community leader after police alleged that a restricted veterinary sedative was used to carry out the crime.
Five suspects have now been arrested as investigators uncover what they describe as a planned attack linked to a long-running land dispute.
The police claims victim was deceived into attending a fake land meeting before he was allegedly attacked. Investigators also believe the killing followed months of threats within the community.
According to the Nigeria Police Force, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad arrested the suspects after an investigation ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
Police alleged that the suspects obtained S.P.L. Ketamine Hydrochloride 500mg/10ml, a restricted veterinary sedative, before carrying out the attack. Detectives also linked the incident to disagreements over money generated from the sale of community land.
Investigators said one clan received about N39 million from the land sales. The community reportedly agreed to invest the money in a town hall and other projects.
According to investigators, Emmanuel Nwanneniya was invited to inspect land with people posing as buyers. Police alleged he was overpowered, restrained and injected with the restricted sedative before his phone and banking details were taken.
Police said the victim’s wife helped investigators after reporting that her husband never returned from the meeting.
The Force stated, “Police say her statement, alongside digital evidence and intelligence analysis, helped investigators trace the suspects.”
Speaking during the parade, ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey praised the operation and raised concerns about how criminals obtained the restricted drug. He urged NAFDAC and other regulators to strengthen control over such substances.
However, the Nigeria Police Force said everyone connected to the alleged conspiracy would be identified as investigation remains ongoing.
