Colombia has announced a diplomatic shift by choosing Nigeria for a new embassy while shutting down several foreign missions, including its embassies in Ghana and South Africa.
The decision comes as Colombia’s President-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, begins a major review of the country’s diplomatic network. While many embassies and consulates will be closed to reduce costs, Nigeria has emerged as a key partner in Colombia’s renewed engagement with Africa.
The move is expected to strengthen diplomatic, trade and investment ties between both countries.
Speaking ahead of his inauguration on August 7, De la Espriella said the planned embassy would serve as a bridge for stronger cooperation between both nations.
According to him, Nigeria occupies a strategic place in Colombia’s foreign policy because of its economic strength and regional influence.
He explained that the new mission would create more opportunities for business, cultural exchange and diplomatic engagement.
Meanwhile, Colombia currently maintains relations with Nigeria through its Honorary High Consul, Mrs. Maricel Romero. The president-elect credited her with helping to strengthen commercial and cultural ties between both countries.
However, he believes a permanent diplomatic mission will take the relationship to a higher level.
The incoming administration plans to close 14 embassies and 15 consulates across different regions. According to officials, the decision is aimed at improving efficiency and making better use of government resources.
“We will determine whether all the embassies that remain open should continue as they are,” De la Espriella said.
He added that some diplomatic missions could be merged or managed through concurrent accreditation.
Furthermore, the president-elect announced that a technical audit of Colombia’s diplomatic missions would begin within his first 100 days in office.
The review will assess how each embassy contributes to Colombia’s foreign policy goals and national interests.
Moreover, stronger diplomatic ties could encourage new investments, improve trade relations and deepen cultural cooperation between both countries.
