The Nigerian Army has received a major international honour after it was named Africa’s Best National Army in Counter-Terrorism Operations for 2025.
The recognition was announced by African Security Watch, which praised the Army for its intelligence-led operations, strategic leadership and sustained efforts to improve security.
The honour has been viewed as a major boost for the Nigerian Army and its personnel. “
The award was officially presented to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja. It was handed over by Major General Teriworie Gagariga, who had earlier received it on behalf of the Army during the African Security Watch Awards Ceremony held in Banjul, The Gambia.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the award confirms the Army’s emergence as one of Africa’s leading forces in Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Insurgency Operations (CTCOIN).
The statement explained that the Army’s consistent intelligence-driven operations have weakened terrorist networks, improved security in several communities and supported peace efforts beyond Nigeria’s borders. In addition, the military’s growing cooperation with other security agencies was recognised as a key factor behind the achievement.
Reacting to the award, Lieutenant General Shaibu described the recognition as a tribute to the dedication of officers and soldiers serving across the country.
Receiving the award, the Army Chief said it recognised the “extraordinary courage, professionalism, resilience and unwavering dedication” of military personnel committed to defending Nigeria and protecting its citizens.
He also dedicated the honour to officers and soldiers who lost their lives while serving the country.
According to him, their sacrifices continue to inspire serving personnel in their mission to secure the nation against terrorism and other security threats.
Meanwhile, the COAS reaffirmed the Army’s determination to build on its recent successes. He explained that stronger intelligence gathering, improved cooperation with other security agencies and better training would remain top priorities.
Furthermore, he said the Army would continue investing in personnel welfare while acquiring modern equipment needed to respond to emerging threats across the country.
The Army Chief stressed that these efforts would strengthen operational effectiveness and improve the military’s ability to respond quickly whenever security challenges arise.
African Security Watch also explained why the Nigerian Army received the prestigious recognition.
According to the organisation, the military earned the award because of its coordinated joint operations, intelligence-led campaigns, effective civil-military cooperation and continuous investment in force development and capacity building.
The organisation added that these efforts have significantly weakened terrorist organisations operating in Nigeria and contributed to regional peace and stability.
Moreover, the recognition highlights the importance of intelligence-sharing and strategic planning in modern military operations.
