Nigerians Face New Tax ID Rule as Government Unveils Nationwide System

A major change is coming to Nigeria’s tax system after the Nigeria Revenue Service introduced a new nationwide Taxpayer Identification framework for all taxable persons.

The move, announced in partnership with the Joint Revenue Board, is expected to reshape how millions of Nigerians interact with tax authorities. Moreover, the new system will create a single identity structure for taxpayers across federal and state levels.

The announcement was made on Monday through an official notice shared on the agency’s X handle. According to the Nigeria Revenue Service, the initiative is backed by Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025.

Officials said every taxable person in the country would now be required to obtain a Tax ID under the new framework.

The development has already sparked nationwide conversations as many Nigerians try to understand how the new process could affect tax registration, filing, and payments in the future.

According to the agency, the framework will simplify communication between taxpayers and tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels.

“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the NRS said.

The agency explained that the new structure would help consolidate taxpayer records while improving the management of tax-related information nationwide.

“It is designed to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and ensure more efficient management of tax-related information,” it added.

Furthermore, officials stated that the system would make compliance easier for individuals and businesses operating across Nigeria.

“The initiative will simplify tax compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures,” the agency said.

Experts believe the initiative could significantly improve accountability within the nation’s tax collection process. Therefore, authorities expect better tracking of taxpayer information and fewer leakages in the system.

In addition, the agency noted that the framework would support stronger coordination between government institutions responsible for revenue collection.

“The system will improve transparency by enabling better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records while reducing leakages and improving accountability in tax collection,” the agency stated.

“The framework will also harmonise taxpayer information across all levels of government.”

As implementation begins, many Nigerians are now watching closely to see how the policy will affect businesses, workers, and everyday taxpayers nationwide.
