Zelensky Pushes Europe to Seize Russian Shadow Fleet Oil

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged European leaders to take bold legal steps against Russia’s oil network. Moreover, he called for coordinated efforts to block and seize vessels linked to Moscow.

Speaking in Helsinki, Zelensky made it clear that time for hesitation is over.

“We need joint action to create strong laws in Europe that allow countries to block Russian tankers and confiscate the oil,” he said. “This should be a real tool to take away Russia’s ability to pressure Europe.”

His comments came at a time when concerns over energy security remain high. Meanwhile, Russia continues to find ways around existing sanctions.

The so-called shadow fleet has been widely used to bypass restrictions imposed after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

In addition, their ownership is usually hidden, making enforcement more difficult.

Zelensky also encouraged broader cooperation across Europe. “Please also help others in Europe move these decisions forward and implement them at home,” he added.

However, some countries have already taken steps in that direction. Denmark, Sweden, and France have carried out enforcement actions against suspected vessels.

Zelensky praised these efforts as proof that action works. “Their actions were a clear demonstration that enforcement is not only possible but effective,” he said.

Recent incidents highlight the growing tension at sea. A tanker was seized by the French navy in the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, Sweden detained the Sea Owl I vessel.

Its captain was arrested over alleged document falsification. Furthermore, these moves signal a shift toward stricter enforcement.

The United Kingdom has also joined the effort. New powers have been introduced, allowing the military to board and seize sanctioned ships.

According to EU data, nearly 600 vessels are believed to be part of this network.

Moreover, such actions could impact global oil markets and trade routes. This adds another layer of complexity to an already tense situation.
