French Warships Dock in Mombasa With 800 Troops

More than 800 French soldiers have arrived in Kenya in a development that has drawn attention across the region.  The troops docked at the Port of Mombasa aboard three French warships. The deployment is expected to focus on military training and maritime security operations. It also signals a deeper defence relationship between Nairobi and Paris.

However, the sudden arrival of a large foreign military group has raised questions about the expanding security cooperation between the two nations. Officials say the French military personnel are in Kenya mainly for joint training exercises with the Kenya Defence Forces.

According to French Ambassador to Kenya Arnaud Suuet, the deployment forms part of broader defence collaboration between both countries. The ambassador explained that the mission aims to strengthen coordination between the two militaries.

Moreover, the program is expected to improve operational readiness and security along the Indian Ocean coastline. Kenya’s coastal region remains strategically important because of shipping routes and growing maritime threats.

The visiting French troops will work closely with Kenya’s naval forces during the mission. Training will focus on maritime operations, naval tactics and coordination at sea.

These exercises are expected to improve the ability of both forces to respond to security threats. Meanwhile, French embassy officials stressed that the deployment is not limited to classroom lessons.

According to embassy spokesperson Romain Boyer, the soldiers are actively participating in operational exercises.

“The mission of the French group deployed here is a training mission for cadets. We have some young officers that will finish their training at sea and then join the first unit,” Boyer said.

He further explained that practical training is a major part of the exercise.

“But it is an operational mission. We are training and delivering an operation at sea. It is all about partnership, especially with the rise in war and conflict in the Indian Ocean,” he added.

The proposed pact has been presented before the National Assembly for consideration. If approved, the agreement will establish clear rules governing French military activities in the country. Furthermore, it would define the legal and operational framework for visiting forces. Under the proposed deal, French soldiers may receive diplomatic-style privileges while performing official duties.

Logistical support, operational guidelines and legal protections would also be clearly outlined. However, lawmakers have invited citizens and other stakeholders to share their views before the agreement is ratified.
