Adamu Atiku Abubakar has stepped down as Adamawa Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.
The move comes amid sweeping political changes in the state. Moreover, it follows the recent defection of top officials to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His resignation has raised questions about the direction of Adamawa politics. However, Adamu insists his decision was personal and carefully thought out.
In a letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, he formally announced his exit.
The Adamu Atiku resignation was described as the result of “deep personal reflection and careful consideration” of his political and professional future.

He stated that serving in the administration had been an honour. In addition, he thanked the governor for the opportunity to contribute to infrastructure growth in the state. His tenure focused on roads, energy projects, and public works.
Adamu also expressed gratitude to the people of Adamawa State. He noted that their trust enabled him to perform effectively while in office. Furthermore, he prayed for continued success for the state and its leadership.
The resignation comes days after a major political realignment. On February 27, 2026, Governor Fintiri and 22 commissioners left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC. However, Adamu did not join the defection.
He was absent when the political switch was publicly announced. Meanwhile, his decision to remain outside the mass movement fueled speculation about his next steps.
The son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Adamu has remained a notable figure in Adamawa politics.
While others followed the governor into the APC, he chose a different path.
However, no public disagreement was mentioned in his letter. Instead, his tone remained respectful and appreciative.
