Russia has strongly condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing it as a shocking breach of international law.
President Vladimir Putin reacted on Sunday, calling the attack a grave violation of human morality.
The development has shaken global politics. However, Moscow has limited its public reaction to condemnation and condolences.
In a formal message sent to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin did not hold back. “Please accept my deep condolences in connection with the murder of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family, committed in cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law,” Putin said in the note.
Putin condemns Khamenei killing statement followed confirmation by Iranian state media that Khamenei was killed in U.S.-Israeli air strikes on Saturday. He was 86 years old.

Putin described the assassination as a “cynical” murder. Furthermore, he stressed that Khamenei would be remembered in Russia as an outstanding statesman. According to him, the late leader helped strengthen ties between Moscow and Tehran into what he called a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Meanwhile, Russia warned that the recent military strikes have pushed the Middle East closer to chaos. Officials in Moscow said the region now risks sliding into deeper instability.
Although Russia has long supported Iran diplomatically, reports suggest Tehran received limited direct assistance during the crisis. However, Putin maintained close ties with Khamenei over the years.
In addition, Putin expressed hope that his condolences would reach Khamenei’s family and the Iranian people.
