Panic broke out on Monday after a massive fire engulfed the old terminal of the Lagos international airport.
Thick smoke was seen rising from the structure as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
The Lagos international airport fire reportedly started around 3:30 p.m. However, the exact cause of the inferno could not be confirmed as of the time this report was filed.
The affected terminal is currently undergoing reconstruction by the Federal Government. Therefore, concerns were raised about possible damage to ongoing renovation work.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Henry Agbebire, confirmed the incident shortly after it occurred.
According to him, firefighters were immediately deployed to contain the situation. “No loss of life has been recorded. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” Agbebire said.
Meanwhile, FAAN fire crews worked actively to bring the flames under control. The response was said to be swift, and emergency teams were seen coordinating efforts around the site.
Although the cause remains unclear, investigations are expected to begin once the fire is fully extinguished. In addition, safety assessments will likely be carried out to determine the extent of structural damage.
The Lagos international airport fire comes nearly two years after a similar incident at the airport’s international wing. On September 6, 2023, FAAN disclosed that a suspected electrical spark at the baggage hall ceiling caused a smoke incident at Terminal 1.
That earlier event had also raised safety concerns. However, no major casualties were recorded at the time.
