US Lawmaker Moves to End Dual Citizenship

A new proposal in the United States has created surprise and concern as a lawmaker moves to end dual citizenship for American nationals.

The bill, which has been introduced in Congress, could affect millions globally and thousands of Nigerians who currently hold American passports.

The development is viewed as unexpected, especially as debates about citizenship have intensified in recent months.

Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno filed the US dual citizenship bill, which seeks to require Americans to hold only one nationality.

Moreover, his proposal aims to force citizens with two nationalities to choose within one year.

The move has already triggered discussions among immigration experts who fear the impact may be wide.

Moreno, who was born in Colombia, said he renounced his Colombian citizenship when he turned 18.

In his statement, the senator stressed his belief in full loyalty to the country.

“It was an honor to pledge an oath of allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America,” he said.

Furthermore, he added that “Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing.”

The bill argues that dual citizenship “may create conflicts of interest and divided loyalties.”

Therefore, the proposal seeks to end the current policy, which allows Americans to hold another nationality if that country supports dual citizenship.

Meanwhile, critics say the bill could disrupt families with mixed citizenships and affect global mobility.

This legislative push is emerging shortly after President Donald Trump issued an executive order aimed at stopping automatic citizenship for children of undocumented migrants.

However, the order was immediately challenged by eighteen states and several rights groups.

They argue it violates the 14th Amendment, which guarantees birthright citizenship.

The legal fight has paused its implementation while courts review the case.
