Former Premier League winger Eljero Elia has survived a serious three-car crash that destroyed his £270,000 Lamborghini Urus on a Dutch motorway.
The accident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2025, along the A4 motorway near Leiden, the Netherlands.
According to reports from Omroep West, the 38-year-old former Southampton player said the crash happened after a car in front of him “suddenly stopped” without using its hazard lights.
Elia explained that he tried to avoid a direct collision, but his vehicle skidded on the road.
“The traffic in front of me suddenly stopped; I couldn’t brake in time,” Elia said.
“I was driving in a stretch of road that’s normally quiet around that time. Suddenly, I saw the traffic in front of me brake and come to a standstill. I tried to brake, but I skidded.”

“The only thing I could do was avoid hitting the car directly behind me. I steered past it a bit, which caused me to hit it more on the side,” he added.
The collision involved three vehicles, leading to the temporary closure of the motorway for several hours as police conducted an investigation and cleared debris.
Tow trucks were later brought in to remove the heavily damaged cars from the scene.
Meanwhile, reports from Dutch media confirmed that at least one driver was taken into custody following the crash.
Elia also entered a police van for questioning but was later released after providing his statement.
Fortunately, no injuries were recorded. Elia confirmed that everyone involved walked away safely.
“There’s only damage to the cars, that’s it,” he said. “It could have been worse, anyway. Everyone was shocked. I told them what happened and then I went home.”
The retired footballer later took to Instagram to thank God and reassure his fans.
“Everyone healthy and well got out of the recent situation. God is great,” he wrote.
Elia, who retired from professional football in 2022, began and ended his career at ADO Den Haag.
He enjoyed an illustrious run across Europe, featuring for Twente, Hamburg, Juventus, Werder Bremen, Feyenoord, Istanbul Basaksehir, and Utrecht.
During his time at Southampton in 2015, he made 17 appearances and scored twice in a 2-1 victory against Newcastle United, which would become his most memorable performance for the English club.
