Dangote Cement Moves to End Reckless Driving With Fresh Training

In a move to boost operational efficiency and road safety, Dangote Cement Plc has organised its 2025 Annual Drivers’ Retreat, training over 900 truck drivers at its Ibese factory in Ogun State.

The event, which took place in Ilaro, is part of the company’s commitment to continuous retraining of its fleet drivers across Nigeria.

Another extensive retraining session has already been scheduled for Obajana, Kogi State, next week.

Speaking during the retreat, the Managing Director of Dangote Cement, Mr. Arvind Pathak, stressed that road safety remains the company’s top priority.

He explained that with thousands of trucks on Nigerian highways, retraining drivers was not only essential but a corporate responsibility.

“As a leading cement manufacturer with thousands of trucks in its fleet, safety on the road remains our core mandate,” Mr. Pathak said.

“The essence of this yearly training is to remind drivers of our brand values and ensure they stay committed to the Absolute Safer Road Policy of the Group.”

Mr. Pathak further explained that every driver employed by Dangote Cement goes through a rigorous recruitment and training process before being certified.

This includes background checks, guarantor verification, drug and alcohol testing, medical screenings such as vision and blood pressure tests, as well as a two-week intensive training program.

“In the past two months alone, over 2,000 prospective drivers have completed this process. Only those who meet all standards are cleared to operate Dangote Group vehicles,” he added.

He also revealed that the company conducts regular pre-trip medical assessments and routine drug tests to ensure drivers remain physically and mentally fit.

According to him, Dangote Cement will continue to partner with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulatory agencies to strengthen compliance and safety measures.

Also speaking at the retreat, the Group Chief of Health Safety Social and Environment Officer, Dr. James Adenuga, explained that the training was designed to educate drivers in simple, relatable language.

“We partner with FRSC to prepare drivers for professional driving, equipping them with fundamentals to avoid reckless practices.

We also recognise and reward drivers who demonstrate discipline and good behaviour,” he said.

Meanwhile, Road Safety Expert Mr. Oje Ebhota emphasised safe driving habits, warning against impatience, aggressive driving, phone use behind the wheel, and disobedience to traffic signs.

“Drivers are not just employees; they are ambassadors of the Dangote Group. They must consider other road users while on the road,” he stated.

However, with thousands of trucks moving products nationwide daily, Dangote Cement drivers training has become an essential strategy to prevent accidents and improve public safety.

The company has maintained that strengthening its driver onboarding process, applying strict behavioural standards, and collaborating with regulators are part of its long-term safety vision.

Mr. Pathak concluded that Dangote Cement remains committed to “transparency, accountability, and compassion” in its operations, ensuring its drivers remain among the best-trained in the industry.
