Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is reportedly receiving medical care in London, after falling ill during what was meant to be a routine check-up.
The 82-year-old, who completed his second term in May 2023, has been outside the country since April, with close family sources confirming his ongoing treatment abroad.
Initially, it was said that President Buhari traveled to the UK for his usual annual medical review.
However, it was later revealed that his health took an unexpected turn.

“There are conflicting reports about when exactly he became unwell,” a family source said.
“Some say he fell ill in Nigeria and was flown out. Others insist he only took ill after arriving in London for regular medical checks.”
The development, though quietly managed, has revived fresh concerns and discussions around the former leader’s long-standing reliance on foreign healthcare.
When contacted by the press, Garba Shehu, Mr. Buhari’s longtime spokesperson, confirmed the reports.
“Following your enquiry, I wish to state as follows: It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” he stated.
Shehu further explained that the former president’s condition was under control and that he was recovering well.
“You would recall he made it known that he was going for his annual medical check-up.
He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery while receiving treatment. We pray for his healthy recovery,” he added.
Meanwhile, the specific illness and the name of the medical facility where Buhari is being treated remain undisclosed.
It will be remembered that throughout his presidency, Buhari was known for making several medical trips abroad, especially to the United Kingdom.
At the peak of these trips, reports claimed that an apartment was secured near his London hospital for discreet and easy access.

Sources suggest his health had seen steady improvement after leaving office in 2023, but things reportedly took a downturn again in April 2025.
Since then, he has stayed back in the UK, undergoing treatment and staying out of the public eye.
As of now, there has been no official update from the Nigerian government concerning his condition.
President Buhari, who retired to his hometown of Daura in Katsina State after leaving office, has mostly stayed out of political matters since his exit.
However, this current development has brought him back into public discussion, with many expressing their shock.
