Bernard Lacombe former France striker Dies at 72

French football is mourning the loss of one of its brightest stars, Bernard Lacombe, who passed away at the age of 72.

His death has sent waves of sorrow across the football world, especially among fans of Olympique Lyonnais and Bordeaux where he left an unforgettable mark.

The news was confirmed by Lyon in an emotional post on Tuesday evening.

“It is with great sadness that we learned this Tuesday evening of the death of Bernard Lacombe,” the club stated. “All our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones, as well as to the fans of Olympique Lyonnais and football.”

Lyon’s tribute ended with heartfelt words: “Farewell Bernard, you were our legend, the greatest of all.”

He is remembered for scoring the fastest goal by a Frenchman at the World Cup, netting after just 30 seconds against Italy in 1978.

His efforts also helped France win the 1984 European Championship, a highlight of his international career.

In total, Lacombe scored 304 goals in 592 club matches and netted 12 times in 38 appearances for France.

His sharp eye for goals earned him the title of the second-highest scorer in French Division 1 history.

Following his retirement in 1987, Lacombe continued to serve the game.

He coached Lyon between 1996 and 2000 and remained a crucial figure in the club’s growth and success during that period.

His influence went beyond the pitch, shaping the club’s identity and legacy.

Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation (FFF), shared a moving tribute.

“It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Bernard Lacombe,” he said. “Bernard Lacombe left an indelible mark on French football, as a player, coach, and manager.”

Diallo praised his many achievements.

“He was one of the greatest strikers in the history of French football. The second-highest scorer in Division 1, he made his mark on the glorious history of Lyon, Saint-Étienne, and Bordeaux. He also shone with the French national team.”

Furthermore, Diallo recalled Lacombe’s role in the 1984 Euro victory and the unforgettable 1978 World Cup goal.

“He was undoubtedly a source of inspiration for many strikers,” he added.

“After his remarkable playing career, Bernard Lacombe put his footballing knowledge to work for Olympique Lyonnais, his beloved club,” Diallo said.

He noted Lacombe’s partnership with Jean-Michel Aulas, a key factor in OL’s transformation into a successful modern club.

“Deeply attached to his city, his club, and his friends, Bernard Lacombe will be deeply missed,” Diallo concluded.

“On behalf of all French football, I extend my most sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
