Tinubu’s \$61K Patek Watch Sparks Uproar Amid Nigeria’s Harsh Economy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu spotted wearing a luxury Patek wristwatch valued at over \$61,000 during a recent meeting.

The moment, which was meant to celebrate chess champion Tunde Onakoya, has instead stirred outrage across social media.

Many Nigerians were stunned by the President’s choice of accessory, especially at a time when the country is facing growing economic hardship.

The Patek Philippe timepiece, reportedly worth \$61,280 (approximately ₦94 million at the official exchange rate), became the center of an intense online conversation about priorities and leadership optics in tough times.

While the president’s supporters have remained largely silent, ordinary Nigerians have taken to social media to express disappointment and frustration.

This backlash comes as food prices soar, unemployment deepens, and the cost of living becomes unbearable for many families.

Therefore, the sight of a high-end luxury watch on the President’s wrist has been described by critics as “tone-deaf.”

One user, Aghedo, voiced his anger saying, “President of the federal republic of Nigeria. Money when dey this country too long.”

The sentiment was echoed by Olasunkanmi, who added, “Tinubu nor small before now. Money na water.”

Meanwhile, another user, Bamigbelu Olu, sarcastically commented, “This one wey look like #750 Aboki watch?”

Though President Tinubu has not publicly addressed the issue, the timing and setting of the event have left many Nigerians displeased.

Onakoya’s record-breaking achievement a proud moment for the country has unfortunately been overshadowed by the President’s controversial timepiece.
