Lagos Police Debunk False Claims of Boko Haram Arrests

Lagos State Police Command has debunked a publication by Punch Newspaper dated April 17, 2025, which falsely claimed that hundreds of Boko Haram suspects had been arrested in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, swiftly ordered an investigation to verify the truth of the claim, with the results showing no evidence of Boko Haram activity in Lagos.

“Following the publication, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed an immediate investigation into the report to ascertain the true position of the claim,” the statement read.

The investigation found no sightings or arrests related to Boko Haram anywhere within Lagos State.

In addition, the leaders, operators, and drivers in the trailer park communities mentioned in the article confirmed to the police that no such arrests had taken place in their areas.

The police deployed surveillance detectives, along with the Lagos State Police Intelligence Department (SID), to these locations for verification, further confirming that no members of Boko Haram had been identified or arrested.

This false report was deemed “malicious and ill-intended,” aimed at creating unnecessary panic among the public.

“The report in its entirety is false, malicious, and ill-intended to cause fear and apprehension in the minds of the public,” the statement continued.

Lagos residents are urged to disregard the news, which is a figment of the writer’s imagination, and to maintain peace.

Meanwhile, CP Jimoh reassured the public that they could continue their daily routines without fear.

In light of this, the police have urged media outlets to avoid publishing unverified stories that could disrupt public peace.

“The media are enjoined not to allow the use of their very esteemed publications to incite fake news, and outright falsehood that can jeopardize the peace and tranquility being enjoyed in Lagos State,” the statement advised. It is important for journalists to verify facts before publication.
