A tragic helicopter crash in the Hudson River on Thursday afternoon has left six people dead, drawing urgent attention to air safety and the investigation into what caused the fatal incident.
The crash occurred around 3:17 p.m. shortly after the helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, departed from the Wall Street Heliport in Lower Manhattan.
The aircraft had reportedly reached the George Washington Bridge before turning abruptly and crashing into the water near River Drive in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Among those killed were five members of a Spanish family from Barcelona.
The victims included Agustin Escobar, an executive at the European company Siemens, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three young children aged 4, 5, and 11.
The sixth victim was the 36-year-old pilot, whose name has not yet been released.
He was employed by the tour operator and was reported to have significant flying experience.
The incident has drawn widespread concern, especially considering that it involved tourists visiting New York on vacation.
Authorities believe the crash could have been due to mechanical issues, although the helicopter crash cause is still under investigation.
Footage captured at the scene showed that the helicopter was missing essential parts such as the tail rotor and one of the main rotor blades.
It had flipped upside down before plunging into the river.
Officials have not confirmed whether these parts became detached during the flight or before takeoff.

Victims were transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where rescue teams and medical staff worked swiftly to try and save lives.
Mayor Eric Adams of New York City expressed deep sympathy during a press briefing, saying, “Our hearts go out to the family and those on board.”
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop also recognized the dedication of the emergency responders.
He noted that those at the medical center “tried as hard as they could,” despite the severity of the situation.
His statement highlighted the urgency and emotional weight the crash has placed on both citizens and first responders.
Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken over the investigation.
Their main task is to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether any safety protocols were breached.
