Former Presidential Aide Doyin Okupe Passes Away at 72

The death of former media aide Doyin Okupe has left a deep void in the political and media landscape of Nigeria.

His passing, which occurred on Friday, March 7, at a hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos, has been described as a painful loss.

According to family sources, Okupe had been critically ill for weeks before his demise.

Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Okupe was the son of Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe, a banker with Agbonmagbe Bank.

His early education took place at St. Jude’s School in Ebute Metta and Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos.

He later attended the University of Ibadan, where he pursued higher studies.

Okupe played a significant role in Nigeria’s political sphere.

At the beginning of the Fourth Republic, he was appointed as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He later ventured into politics and contested in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for the Ogun State governorship position in 2002.

Though he did not secure the ticket, his influence remained strong in the party.

In 2012, he was appointed as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Furthermore, in recent years, he served as the spokesperson for the Peter Obi Presidential campaign, actively engaging in political discourse.

His contributions to media and governance will be remembered for years to come.

He is survived by his wife and children.

His passing is indeed a great loss.
