The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, is set to embark on 21 days of traditional rites as part of his ascension to the throne.
The announcement came after Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde formally presented him with the Staff of Office in a ceremony held at the Governor’s office in Ibadan on Monday.
Oba Owoade succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away in April 2022 after a remarkable reign spanning five decades.
Following the presentation, the monarch headed to Oyo Town, where he was warmly received by jubilant residents eager to witness this historic moment.
According to a source, “Oba Owoade has headed to Oyo town to meet the sons and daughters of Oyo town and will proceed for his mandatory 21 days of traditional rites.”
Governor Makinde, while presenting the insignia of office, described the Alaafin-elect as a leader poised to safeguard and elevate the rich cultural heritage of the Oyo Kingdom.
“We are assured that Oba Owoade will lead with wisdom, integrity, and a strong commitment to fostering unity,” the governor stated.
The ceremony, which included prayers by Islamic, Christian, and traditional clerics, was attended by dignitaries, government officials, and enthusiastic Oyo indigenes.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade pledged to focus on the development of the kingdom, emphasizing youth empowerment, economic growth, and cultural preservation.
He stated, “I will devote myself to the advancement and prosperity of the Oyo Kingdom while ensuring that the traditions and values that have sustained us for generations remain steadfast.”
The Alaafin-elect’s reign marks a new chapter for the Oyo Kingdom, with expectations of unity and progress under his leadership.
As the 46th Alaafin, Oba Owoade’s tenure is anticipated to bring positive changes and growth, heralding a better future for the community.
Citizens are urged to work together with the monarch to realize the kingdom’s potential and preserve its legacy.
