South African sensation Tyla claimed the Top Afrobeats Artist of the Year award at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards on Thursday, December 12, making history in a category often dominated by Nigerian heavyweights.
Tyla outshone stars like Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Asake to clinch the prestigious title, solidifying her global impact with her smash hit “Water.”
She also bagged the Top Afrobeats Song award for the same track, edging out entries from Adam Port & Stryv and Tems.
This milestone adds to Tyla’s remarkable year, which saw her win the inaugural Grammy for Best African Music Performance in February at just 22 years old, becoming the youngest African artist to achieve this feat.
Nigerian fans and artists celebrated her win while acknowledging the need to double down for future accolades.
However, with Tyla’s success, the competition in the Afrobeats space continues to inspire innovation and excellence.
