Speaking in Abuja, NLC Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Benson Upah, confirmed that the ultimatum remains in effect.

“Yes, the ultimatum still stands. Nothing has changed,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of meeting workers’ demands amidst escalating economic challenges.

States such as Sokoto and Taraba have made strides toward compliance.

Sokoto’s Deputy Governor, Alhaji Idris Gobir, reassured labor representatives of his commitment to facilitating quick harmonization of the new wage structure, urging the union to submit its proposal promptly.

Meanwhile, Taraba State’s Head of Service, Paul Maigida, announced that Governor Agbu Kefas has already approved the new minimum wage, set to take effect from November 2024.

However, other states, including Cross River, Imo, and Osun, are yet to finalize plans, leaving workers uncertain.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has expressed concern over delays in some states, urging swift action to prevent potential industrial action. “State governments must act swiftly to avoid industrial action.

The rising inflation leaves no room for delays in implementing the new wage,” said TUC National Vice President Tommy Etim.

As negotiations continue in several states, labor unions and workers are calling for transparency and accountability from the government to alleviate the financial burden on citizens.
