Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid tribute to his late wife, Stella Obasanjo, recounting her immense sacrifices in securing his release from prison during a dedication ceremony for the newly inaugurated 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, Edo State.
Reflecting on Stella’s relentless dedication during his three-year incarceration under the military regime of General Sani Abacha, Obasanjo expressed gratitude for her efforts.
“My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive. She was in Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world,” he shared.
Stella’s unwavering advocacy during that challenging period highlighted her bravery and devotion, which has left a lasting legacy.
Stella continued to serve Nigeria when Obasanjo became president in 1999, later becoming First Lady until her untimely death in 2005.
Obasanjo acknowledged the pain of her absence, adding, “We were planning for her 68th birthday anniversary but never had it before she died.”
The dedication of the hospital serves as a reminder of Stella’s impact on her family and the nation, inspiring others to live with purpose and dedication to service.
May her soul continue to rest in peace.
