Mass Protest at NNPC Headquarters Amid Fuel Crisis

Thousands of Nigerians gathered outside the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) headquarters on Monday, November 4, to protest against the ongoing fuel crisis and demand the resignation of Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari.

The protest, organized by the Two Million Man March Against Oil Scam Cabal and Citizens and Economic Freedom Rights Activists in Nigeria (CEFRAN), was fueled by widespread dissatisfaction with the fuel subsidy system. Demonstrators accused the system of enriching a select few while the majority of Nigerians struggle with soaring fuel prices and persistent shortages.

Abdullahi Bilal, co-convener of the protest, criticized Kyari’s leadership, claiming that fuel prices have increased significantly without regard for their impact on ordinary citizens. “We are demanding his immediate resignation to allow for leaders who genuinely prioritize the welfare of Nigerians,” Bilal stated.

Protesters denounced the subsidy regime as a vehicle for corruption, calling for full deregulation to enhance transparency and competition within the oil sector. They also condemned the importation of adulterated fuel, labeling it an act of economic sabotage that exacerbates the fuel crisis.

Barrister Napoleon Otache, representing CEFRAN, emphasized the need for accountability. “This act of economic sabotage has led to endless fuel queues and worsened Nigerians’ daily lives. We need answers and accountability for these failures,” he declared.

Demonstrators raised concerns regarding the $4 billion allocated for the rehabilitation of Nigeria’s refineries, expressing frustration over unmet promises for improvement. “Nigerians were assured that the Dangote Refinery would resolve our fuel issues, yet we continue to face scarcity and rising prices,” Bilal noted.

With inflation reaching 24.5% and fuel prices surging by over 200%, CEFRAN has pledged to continue mobilizing support until comprehensive reforms are implemented to address the fuel crisis.
