5,000 Ex-Boko Haram Fighters Reunite with Families – FG

The Federal Government has announced the reintegration of over 5,000 former Boko Haram members into society following their completion of a six-month deradicalisation programme.

The initiative, known as Operation Safe Corridor, was designed to rehabilitate ex-combatants and equip them with skills for self-sufficiency.

Amb. Mairo Musa Abbas, Head of Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE), disclosed this, emphasizing that the programme has been instrumental in ensuring that the former insurgents can reintegrate smoothly.

“Under Operation Safe Corridor programme, we have deradicalised over 5,000 ex-combatants of Boko Haram and reunited them with their families,” she stated.

She further explained that the reintegrated individuals are applying the skills acquired during their rehabilitation to sustain themselves within their respective communities.

Furthermore, she highlighted the role of local agencies and leaders in monitoring the progress of these ex-combatants.

“Our collaborators from the National Orientation Agency (NOA) are within 774 local governments in Nigeria, and traditional and religious leaders within the community have a monitoring mechanism to track their progress after reintegration,” Abbas said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has assured that security agencies and community leaders remain vigilant in ensuring that the former combatants do not pose a threat.
