The Nigerian film industry is mourning the death of veteran actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, who passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 72.
Chief Kanran was a towering figure in the Yoruba movie scene, celebrated for his wit, distinct acting style, and powerful presence on both stage and screen.
His death, confirmed earlier today, has left colleagues, fans, and the entertainment community deeply saddened.
The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed, but tributes have begun pouring in from fans and industry colleagues.

Born into the golden age of Yoruba theatre, Chief Kanran became a household name after his remarkable portrayal of Kurunmi in the play Kurunmi by Prof. Ola Rotimi. His talent seamlessly bridged stage and screen, making him a versatile figure admired across generations.
He was part of the acclaimed TV drama Mirror in the Sun, which marked a turning point in his career.
On October 1, 1988, he played Alaafin Kanran in a drama aired on Lagos Television, a role that further cemented his popularity.
Over the decades, Chief Kanran built a rich filmography, starring in titles such as Vigilante, Ose Sango, Eri Okan, Itunnu, Eewo, Idunnu, Orire, Ofa Oro, Ajaka Oko, Great Bird of Eternity, Shattered Bridge, Oba Oluaiye, Bibi Ire, Ilu Le, and 150 Million.
The news of his passing comes as a heavy blow to Nollywood, which has lost several prominent figures in recent months.
